Crossing Continents For Charity

If you feel like giving this Christmas, how about a donation to Cycle2Learn!

Some people give money to charity. Others cycle thousands of kilometres through dangerous territory to raise it. Meet Tim Gane and Bruce McPhail: two South Africans following their childhood dream of travelling the continent. By bike.

"When we heard about the Tour D'Afrique last year, we both knew that across Africa by bicycle was the way to go," said Gane, who quit his job to do the race.

The 11 777km race from Cairo to Cape Town will take place from January 10 to May 9 next year. Contestants will cycle a hefty 120km a day - which is more than the Cape Argus Pick 'n Pay Cycle Tour.

The pair have dubbed their tour "Cycle2Learn" and will try to raise R180 000 to build two classrooms and a jungle gym for Hebron School in the Eastern Cape.

The pair have been training seriously for the race, and preparing to cycle through countries like Sudan and Kenya. They are relative newcomers to cycling: Gane has been mountain biking and road cycling for two years and McPhail started cycling at the end of 2007 after hearing about the race.

They're intent on hitting the R180 000 mark, and are requesting the public to donate R100.

"We launched the fundraising drive and website in late October and so far we have raised R38 000," said Gane. "All we need is a further 1 420 people to part with just R100 and forever change the lives of 50 kids each and every year at a school in the Eastern Cape - the country's most neglected province."
