Google released its list on Wednesday of the most popular searches in 2008, and Sarah Palin may have been on the losing end of the Republican ticket, but she topped the web search chart.
"Beijing Olympics 2008" came in at number two on the Google list of "fastest-rising" searches around the globe this year followed by "Facebook login" and "Tuenti", a Spanish social networking website.
Searches for "Heath Ledger", the Australian actor who died in January, came in at number four followed by "Obama" - as in Barack Obama, the Democratic candidate for the White House and now US president-elect.
Searches for "Nasza Klasa", a Polish social networking website, and "Wer Kennt Wen", a German one, were next followed by "Euro 2008" and the "Jonas Brothers".
Besides providing a global view of what people were looking for on the internet this year, Google for the first time released search data for more than 30 countries.
In the United States, "Obama" was number one on the Google "fastest-rising" list followed by "Facebook", "ATT", a US phone company, "iPhone", "YouTube" and "Fox News".
While Republican vice presidential candidate Palin may have come in at number one globally she only finished seventh on the list of fastest-rising searches on Google.com by US users in 2008.
The photogenic Palin did, however, finish number one on Google Image Search in 2008, Google said.
Yahoo, which receives about 20% of the annual search queries in the United States compared with more than 60% for Google, released its list of most popular searches worldwide in 2008 on December 1.
Pop star Britney Spears topped the Yahoo list for the seventh time in eight years.
Spears, however, did not appear on the Google "fastest-rising" list which compares the popularity of online searches in 2008 with their frequency the previous year.
