Springbok coach Peter de Villiers and his team would be right if they feel they are on a hiding to nothing going into Saturday’s clash with Wales at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.
As world champions and with the classy players they had at their disposal against sides that were rebuilding, the Boks should have expected to win the Tri-Nations. In the face of this expectation, the fact they came last and lost four of their six matches was a massive disappointment.
On this tour, the Boks should not be expecting to lose. Wales won the Six Nations earlier this year, and Warren Gatland has transformed them into a physical, combative unit, but only once in South African rugby history has the national team lost to Wales, and that was in 1999, when off-field controversies seriously deflected the attention of the players.
There are no excuses this time, for every player who should be there is fit, and if there are worthy players missing (here take your pick of Butch James/BJ Botha/CJ van der Linde/Jannie du Plessis), it was because the selectors left them out.
Let's show them what we can do: GO BOKKE!
